IoT-based Coin Counting System with Bivocom TG451 Gateway: A Demonstration of IoT Application

Introduction

In the era of digitalization, although digital payment methods are widespread, coins still play an important role in many industries such as retail, transportation, and vending. However, traditional coin – counting and management methods are often inefficient, error – prone, and lack real – time monitoring capabilities. The Internet of Things (IoT) technology provides a new approach to solve these problems. This article introduces an IoT – based coin counting system using the Bivocom TG451 Gateway, which showcases a practical and effective IoT application.

Overview

The core of this system is the connection between the Bivocom TG451 gateway and coin acceptors. The rich I/O interfaces of the TG451 gateway enable seamless connection with coin acceptors. When a coin is inserted into the coin acceptor, it generates a pulse signal. The gateway reads these pulse signals and counts the number of coins in real – time. The counted data is then transmitted to a cloud platform or a local server for further monitoring and analysis.
Topology

Architecture

1 Hardware Layer
  • Coin Acceptor: It is responsible for physically accepting coins and generating corresponding pulse signals for each inserted coin. Different types of coin acceptors can be used according to the application requirements, with high – precision sensors to ensure accurate coin recognition.
  • Bivocom TG451 Gateway: As the key hardware component, it has multiple functions. It can connect to coin acceptors through its I/O ports, collect and process the pulse signals. It also supports various communication protocols such as 4G, Wi – Fi, and Ethernet, enabling flexible data transmission to the upper – layer platform.
  • Power Supply and Other Auxiliary Devices: To ensure the stable operation of the system, appropriate power supplies are needed. Additionally, devices like antennas for wireless communication may be required depending on the specific communication mode.
2 Network Layer
The TG451 gateway can transmit data to the cloud platform or local server through different network channels. If a stable wired network is available, Ethernet can be used. In scenarios where wired connection is difficult, 4G or Wi – Fi can be employed. The data is encrypted during transmission to ensure security and integrity.
3 Application Layer
  • Cloud Platform/Local Server: It receives the coin – counting data from the gateway. The platform has functions for data storage, processing, and visualization. It can generate reports and statistics, and provide real – time monitoring of coin – related information.
  • Management Software: Operators can use management software to access the data on the platform. They can view the coin – counting status, set up alerts for abnormal situations (such as a full coin box), and conduct in – depth data analysis.

Key Features and Advantages

1 Real – time Monitoring
The system can provide real – time information about the number of coins inserted, allowing operators to have an up – to – date understanding of the coin flow. This is particularly useful in scenarios where immediate response is required, such as in vending machines or public transportation ticket machines.
2 Error Reduction
By using automated coin – counting based on pulse signals, the system significantly reduces the error rate compared to manual counting methods. This improves the accuracy of financial transactions and inventory management.
3 Remote Management
With the data transmitted to the cloud or local server, operators can manage the coin – counting system remotely. They can check the status of multiple coin acceptors in different locations, set parameters, and troubleshoot problems without being physically present at the site.
4 Data Analysis
The collected coin – counting data can be analyzed to gain insights into user behavior, peak usage times, and coin – related trends. This information can be used for business decision – making.

Application in a Smart Entertainment System

In a smart entertainment system, such as a game arcade or a coin – operated amusement park, the IoT – based coin counting system has several practical applications.
  • Payment Tracking: The system can accurately track every coin payment made by customers. This helps in calculating the revenue in real – time and provides a clear record of financial transactions.
  • Full Coin Box Alert: When the coin box in the coin acceptor is full, the system can send an alert to the managers. This allows them to arrange for timely collection of coins, preventing potential malfunctions due to over – filling.
  • Usage Statistics: By analyzing the coin – counting data, the system can provide usage statistics of different entertainment devices. Managers can use this information to schedule maintenance during off – peak hours, minimizing the impact on customers.

Conclusion

The IoT – based coin counting system with the Bivocom TG451 gateway offers a comprehensive solution for coin management in various industries. Its real – time monitoring, error – reduction, remote management, and data – analysis capabilities make it a valuable tool for businesses. The application in the smart entertainment system further demonstrates its versatility and practicality. As IoT technology continues to develop, such systems are expected to play an even more important role in the future.
